The short guy in the picture is Matt Lagessie, one of the best builders and racers in the mid-west.(Chicago area.) The picture was taken at the 2006 Jegs Engine Masters Challenge. The engine in the picture is the 424  AMC we ran in the road race Matador, as we could not get the real contest engine done in time. This was a dry sump motor we had 2 days to convert over to a wet sump and get to Long Island in time to meet the contest deadlind. More on this on another page.  Here is Matt's  link. You will find him very much in the know.  http://www.maddmattsauto,com.  While on Matt's site, you can find pictures of the road race Matador we ran over the last few years. On his site, click on Racing Highlights, then choose "Matador Challenge 2003" from the menu.

The above picture shows the 424 CID 401 we took to the 2006 Jegs/Popular Hot Rodding Engine Masters Challenge. The engine we wanted to take to the challenge had Herman Lewis heads and intake, along with a roller cam and 10.5:1 compression.  Since the original engine (432 CID) was not going to be ready in time for the contest, we had two days to get the 424 in the proper condition to meet the contest rules and get it from Chicago to Long Island, N.Y. For example, we had to remove the dry sump setup in order to comply with the contest rules. (Dry sump systems are one of the custom engineered products we offer.) Luckily, the 424 was out of the car, so we were able to work quickly.Even though this engine had a lot of road race time on it, it went through the contest with flying colors, a tribute to the oiling mods we do. Unfortunately, due to giving up a full point in compression, a lot of cam, 10 cubic inches, and lacking good heads and intake, we could not be competitive. Therefore, of the engines that actually finished the pulls (25 engines), we were #25 in the standings. However, there were originally 50 entered, so there were quite a few behind us that did not finish.

This engine was originally built for enduro road racing, and had to run on pump gas with total reliability. The heads were completely stock, with the exception of SS valves, and carried 58cc chambers. Even at a 9.5:1 compression ratio, we still managed 450 dyno hp with a streetable Comp Cams solid flat tappet cam. All dyno runs had to be through the mufflers and air cleaner, no crossover allowed.
